Costa Brava Tourist Guide

Area - Figueras

Figueres is located in the province of Girona and is the capital of the Alt Empordà region. It is also the most important city of the ones near the frontier with France and articulates an important communications hub which makes it a gateway and mandatory stop place for travelers and tourists in and out of Spain.

Among other, Figueres has the following attractions and monuments:

Sant Ferran castle, built during the reign of Ferdinand VI of Spain, in 1743, designed by Juan Martín Zermeño and Pedro Martín-Paredes Zermeño. Pentagonal in plan, its perimeter reaches 5.6 km, being the biggest monument of Catalonia and one of the most remarkable fortified complex in the world for all its outer fortifications.

  • Parish Church of Sant Pere, with one Gothic-style nave and chapels between the buttresses. The header and the steeple are neo-Gothic additions.
  • The Dalí Theatre-Museum was built as a theater in the nineteenth century and restored in 1966, adding a metal lattice dome and original ornaments and surrealistic decoration directed by Salvador Dali himself, born in Figueres, to house his work. The adjacent building is a neoclassical one, decorated and painted raucously, called Torre Galatea, where Dali spent his last years and which after his death has been amended to expand the museum and house the offices of the Gala-Dali Foundation. Under the dome of the museum lie the remains of the genius of the Empordà. It is the museum with more works of Dalí.
  • The Toys Museum of Catalonia was inaugurated in 1982 at the premises of the former Hotel Paris in La Rambla de Figueres. A recent restoration and adaptation have helped triple the original space of the Museum reopened on December 12, 1998. The museum exhibits over 4,000 pieces: zoetrope, Meccans, little theaters, cardboard animals and horses, kitchens, balls, tops, planes, cars, trains, dolls, puppets, magic sets, games for blind, costumes, cut-outs, handles, soldiers, robots, steam engines, teddy bears, tricycles, scooters.
  • The rooms of the Museum of l'Empordà present a wide chronological range of art and archeology of the region, from prehistory to the present day, with a special focus on Catalan and Empordà painting of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
