Empuriabrava is located in the Gulf of Roses and is part of the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries. The development was built in 1967 in the style of the city of Venice but with paved roads (with more than 23 km of navigable waterways it is considered the largest inland marina in the world and is a known touristic destination). The original plan included a much larger area and had even raised the possibility of building a waterway to the town of Figueres. Later, during the transition and coinciding with the first environmental movements the project was stopped in its current scale to avoid damage to the landscaping of Aiguamolls de l'Empordà.
Requires special mention Empuriabrava aerodrome, reference point of activities such as skydiving.
This is a top tourist destination in Europe, French and German being the most common visitors. Apart from the marina, the development has a very strong commercial network established mostly in the area of Els Arcs, while department stores and much of nightlife establishments are found in the north near from the C-68 road.
